Taylor, Kraft Earn Athlete Of The Month Honors For May

June 1, 2011

MILWAUKEE - Samia Taylor and Cole Kraft have been named the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee/U.S. Army ROTC Athletes of the Month for May.

Taylor qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump while Kraft batted .463 in 17 games for the Panther baseball team.

Taylor won the Horizon League title in the triple jump early in the month, setting a new school and league record in the process. Then, she broke the school record again last weekend at the NCAA West Preliminaries in advancing to the NCAA Championships.

Her jump of 42-4 1/4 in Oregon placed her sixth in the meet and earned her the 10th seed for the national championships, which are set for June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Kraft started 17 games in the month of May, collecting 31 hits, including six doubles and three home runs. He drove in 17 runs while posting an on-base percentage of .538 and a slugging percentage of .687. He also scored 18 runs, stole eight bases and committed just one error in 84 chances in the field.

His efforts earned him a pair of Horizon League Player of the Week honors in the month and he also captured first-team all-league recognition.
