Eight Panthers Named To All-Academic Team
June 12, 2002 MILWAUKEE - Eight UWM student-athletes were among 74 people honored by the Horizon League today as members of the 2002 Spring Academic All-Horizon League Team. UWM offers four of the seven spring sports sponsored by the league and its award-winner-per-sport average was the best among league schools. Senior Matt Freisleben was named to the baseball all-academic team for the second-straight year. This season, he set a school-record with 15 saves in leading the Panthers to their second-straight NCAA Tournament berth. Three Panther men's track and field performers were honored. Nick Davis and Adam Hobler each won Horizon League championships in the spring, while Jon Manke was named UWM's Male Athlete of the Year. Four Panther women's track and field performers were also honored. Nicole Frey, Abby Hurst and Katie Seep all won league championships during the outdoor season while Katie Olander finished seventh in the 10,000 meters at the league race. The Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.25 or better on a 4.00 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a league-sponsored sport. The team is comprised of the same number of First Team All-Horizon League student-athletes in each sport. Ties are not broken.
