WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was able to overcome a pair of late Northern Iowa rallies to claim a doubleheader sweep Sunday in non-conference baseball action.
UWM (7-7) won game one after allowing three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before hanging on for a 7-6 win. In game two, the Panthers claimed the win with a single run in the 11th inning after losing a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Panthers had 16 hits in the opener, led by a 3-for-3 effort by Troy Doering. Charlie Reschke, Dave Pudlosky, Matt Alexander and Ben Stanczyk had two hits apiece while Steve Sanfilippo cracked a two-run home run.
Aaron Bushong (1-3) worked 4 2/3 innings for the win, while Chris Roselot absorbed the loss.
In game two, UWM broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the eighth inning and an insurance run in the ninth. But UNI rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, forcing extra frames. After a scoreless 10th inning, the Panthers won the game in the top of the 11th.
Marcellus Dawson went 2-for-5 with a home run to lead the Panthers, while Reschke added two hits and Stanczyk added a home run.
Stanczyk also worked the final 2 2/3 innings to claim the win for UWM after Mikel Schaefer struck out a career-high 12 in working the first 8 1/3 innings. Bill Zenk (1-2) took the loss for Northern Iowa (8-13).
The two teams will play a single game, weather permitting, Monday at 2 p.m.
