DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee surrendered a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to fall in their league-opener, 5-4, to Wright State Friday night in Dayton.
Milwaukee (10-10, 0-1 Horizon) led, 4-3, entering the bottom of the seventh. Jeff Telmnik led off the inning with a double and, after a wild pitch, scored on Adam Morton's single. Morton scored the game-winning run for the Raiders (9-19, 1-4) on a Kofi Gyimah triple.
The Panthers led off the scoring in the first inning on a two-run double by Dave Pudlosky. Troy Doering's run-scoring single in the second and Jeff Pitrof's sacrifice fly in the third pushed UWM's lead to 4-1.
Doering and Ben Stanczyk each collected two hits for UWM, as Doering reached base safely for the 55th consecutive game. Schaefer followed up his one-hit shutout against Valparaiso with 5 1/3 innings in which he struck out eight and allowed three runs.
The series will continue when the Panthers and Raiders play a doubleheader Saturday morning. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. CST.
