MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Sam Koenig of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.

Koenig picked up Batter of the Week accolades after batting .579 in Milwaukee's four games last week with seven of his 11 hits going for extra bases.

The honor is a career-first for Koenig and marks the second time a UWM player has been recognized this season (Cale Tassi in February).

In UWM's 13-2 win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday, Koenig was 2-for-4 as he hit his first double and first triple of the season.

In Milwaukee's 10-9 extra-inning loss to Wright State on Friday, Koenig was 3-for-6 with two doubles and one RBI. On Sunday in the doubleheader against WSU, Koenig was 3-for-4 with one double in the Panthers' 8-3 loss to the Raiders in game one and was 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI in the second game of the doubleheader, a 9-7 Milwaukee win which ended Wright State's 14-game win streak.

In the process, Koenig extended his hitting streak to 11 games, a stretch that has seen him hit .522 (24-for-46).
