Oct. 23, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Demetrius Harris and Steve McWhorter scored 19 points apiece to lead the Gold to an 88-77 win over the Black Tuesday night at the annual University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Full Court Club Intrasquad Scrimmage at the Klotsche Center.
The fast-paced affair saw the two teams combine for 20 made three-pointers.
In all, five players reached double digits for the Gold while four others hit double figures for the Black. In addition to the six assists by Aaron at the point for the Black, Thierno Niang had eight assists to go with 14 points for the Gold.
After the Black claimed the lead in the early going, the Gold exploded to build a double-digit lead it would hold for much of the first half. The advantage was 43-29 after a three-pointer by Panoske and still 49-37 on a layin by Harris. The Black finished the half with a bit of a flourish, as a three-pointer by Aaron at the halftime buzzer made it 49-42.
After the Gold restored a 13-point advantage early in the second half, the Black pulled back within 59-56 on a three-pointer by Arians and eventually took the lead at 68-67 on a layin by Haarsma.
But the Gold staged the final surge. A layin by Evan Richard put Gold up for good at 72-71 and the lead hit 80-73 on a dunk by Harris with less than two minutes to play. Harris then put the finishing touches on the game with a dunk on a lob off the backboard by Richard, providing for the final margin.
UWM will play one exhibition game this season, squaring off with UW-Parkside Nov. 5 at the Klotsche Center. The regular season opener is Nov. 9 against the University of Mary.
