This time, Paulsen hit a pair of 3-pointers during the Panthers' 10-point run opening the second half to tie the game at 44-44.
After Anthony Cordova put the South Dakota State back on top 48-46, Milwaukee ran off eight points to go ahead for good 54-48. Marcus Skinner had two baskets in the decisive scoring spurt and Roman Gentry finished it off.
Tim Flowers added 10 points for Milwaukee.
The Jackrabbits (1-2) were led by Ben Beran with 21 points, Garrett Callahan with 19 and Kai Williams 16.
South Dakota State outscored Milwaukee 12-2 in the final four minutes of the first half to lead 44-34.
Johnson had tied the game at 32-32 with 4:03 left before the Jackrabbits pulled ahead 37-32 with the help of four points by Callahan.
