MILWAUKEE - Sharif Chambliss has been named an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team, head coach Rob Jeter announced today.

Chambliss, a Racine native, comes back to Milwaukee after spending the last two seasons as the video coordinator at Wisconsin.

He previously worked at UWM from 2006-2008 as the men's basketball team's academic mentor.

Chambliss has also served assistant coaching stints at UW-Platteville and Francis Marion University.

"Sharif is a high-energy guy who is very familiar with us and is part of our coaching family," Jeter said. "He has strong ties both in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest and will be able to add to our recruiting efforts immediately. He was also a standout player in the Big Ten and he'll be able to use his experience to really help our guards. He's a great addition to our staff."

"I am really excited to be back in Milwaukee and to get the chance to work with one of my mentors," Chambliss said. "It is a homecoming of sorts to be back with the Panthers and to get another opportunity to work with a great group of coaches and student-athletes. The roots of our coaching tree run deep and I have to thank Bo Ryan and the staff at Wisconsin, along with all of the other coaches I have worked with, for helping to prepare me for this opportunity.

"This is the next step in a career I have invested myself in and I am thankful for the opportunity the coaches and the athletic department leaders have given me. I plan on making the most of it."

Chambliss was a standout player in the Big Ten, starring at both Penn State and Wisconsin. He spent three seasons with the Nittany Lions, leading the team in scoring twice. He then transferred to Wisconsin for his final season, earning a spot as a team captain while helping the Badgers to the Elite Eight in 2005.

Chambliss was a two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten point guard and scored 1,107 points in his collegiate career. Following college, he played professionally in Portugal for two seasons.

Chambliss earned his bachelor of science degree in life science communications from Wisconsin in 2005 and completed a master's degree in adult education from UW-Platteville in May of 2011.
