MILWAUKEE - Senior John Shakon of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team has been named the Horizon League Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced this morning.

Milwaukee took second place at Northwestern's Lakeside Classic this past weekend after downing Northern Illinois, 1-0, to retain the LeWang Trophy and falling, 2-0, to the nationally-ranked Wildcats.

Shakon notched his 13th career shutout to lead Milwaukee to a 1-0 victory over NIU, ensuring that the LeWang Trophy remained with the Panthers. Shakon made four saves in the win before turning in three more in Milwaukee's 2-0 setback to a Northwestern squad that was ranked No. 18 by College Soccer News coming into the match.

His second shutout is now tied for the league lead in 2012. With 29 saves, Shakon ranks third in the Horizon League. The award is a career-first.
