Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming team defended its title with a dominating second day at the Stevens Point Border Battle Saturday. Milwaukee won eight of the day's 13 events and finished with 1,058 points for its seventh straight crown at the big meet.

"We got our work in this weekend and I was happy to see it and happy the men and women did it," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "This meet was something that was absolutely necessary for our training and for our season. We were put to the test, both mentally and physically over the weekend and I feel like we prevailed in everything we were looking for, not just the result but pushing ourselves. The times are not going to really reflect what happened here but we proved to ourselves that we can do what we need to and that will be necessary come February."

Defending Horizon League Swimmer of the Week Nic Halverson won two more Saturday. The freshman first took the top spot in the 400 IM with a winning time of 4:15.67. Sophomore Kenny Stelpflug was second at 4:21.64. Halverson then edged out brother Tim Halverson in the 1650 freestyle, with Nic winning the event at 16:39.42 and Tim coming in second at 16:51.78.

Junior Chris Jenkyns and senior Sam Niesen took turns winning the backstroke events on the day. Jenkyns took the top spot in the 200 back at 1:57.02 with Niesen right behind at 1:57.62 for second. The duo switch spots in the 100 back as Niesen touched the wall first in 53.23 seconds and Jenkyns taking second at 54.43.

Senior Nathan Welchlin continued his dominance in the pool, winning the 100 butterfly at 50.64, nearly two seconds in front of the next swimmer.

Mike Brady also was a winner on the day, out pacing the field in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 45.84 seconds, more than a full second in front of second place.

The Panthers also won a pair of relays on the day. Both Halversons, Brady and Ryan Finke combined to post a time of 7:13.52 in the 800 free relay to win the event by more than three seconds. Then, in the day's final event, Welchlin, Niesen, Brady and Erik Wahlgren teamed up to win the 400 free relay at 3:07.29.

Milwaukee will take a break from action for Thanksgiving before returning Nov. 30 for the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational.
