Panthers Win Seventh-Straight League Championship
LISLE, Ill. (May 2, 2010) - Senior Tyler Bucholz won three events and broke three league records to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team to the 2010 Horizon League Outdoor Championship with a strong Sunday showing. The Panthers won their seventh-straight league outdoor title, and 14th crown overall, with 174 points. Host UIC took second place, 67 points back of UWM. Youngstown State was third with and Butler fourth with 87. Detroit edged Loyola for fifth place, 75-73, while Valparaiso rounded out the field with 37 points. "We got enough results, top 10's, school records and league records to really get the job done this weekend," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "The kids did awesome, it was great to see them put it all on the line and step up when it mattered. They also had smiles at the end, so you know they have more in them for post-season meets coming up." Alongside the Milwaukee women's sweep, the men's and women's program completed just the third single-season sweep in league history. The Panthers also won all four league championships in 2001 and 2007. UWM swept all of the specialty awards as Bucholz (Track) and sophomore Matt Jensen (Field) were named Outstanding Performers of the Meet. Freshmen Ryan Weir (Track) and Dan Simon (Field) were named Newcomers of the Year. Corfeld was also named the Horizon League Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side to give him 40 league coach of the year awards in his career, while he now has 40 career titles to his credit. Bucholz's strongest showing came in the 400m, where he ran the first sub-47.00 time in school history. His time of 46.69 eclipsed his own school record (47.09) and former teammate Isaiah Adams' league record (47.11). Junior Jared Foerch also scored in the event, taking sixth with a time of 48.78, moving into a tie for 10th in school history. In the 200m, Bucholz PR'd in 21.13 to win and break that league record, as well.
In the relays, Bucholz ran with both the first-place and record-setting 4x400m relay and the third-place 4x100m relay. In the 4x400m, Weir, Foerch and junior Cory Yttre ran a time of 3:11.91, also moving up to third in school history in the process. The 4x100m featured Bucholz, Yttre and sophomores Jake Whitewater and Drew Feuk and ran a time of 41.91. Jensen had a breakout meet, posting a second win on the weekend in impressive fashion. After winning the discus throw Saturday, he came back to win the hammer throw on his final throw of the competition. His winning throw was 179-4, moved him up to second in school history and topped his personal record by 13 feet, six inches. Weir finished fourth in the 800m Sunday, running a time of 1:51.96 to crack the school's top-10 list in 10th. Whitewater, who won the long jump Saturday, added the team's last individual championship on Sunday, topping the field in the triple jump. He cleared a personal-best 47-5 3/4 and moved to eighth in school history. Senior Josh Zill also scored with a fifth-place finish and a jump of 46-0 1/2. Milwaukee also had all-league performers in the pole vault, where five Panthers scored, and the 110m hurdles. In the pole vault, Simon was second, sophomores Ben Crogan third and Zack Gowdy fourth. All three cleared 14-1 1/4. Feuk had a final height of 13-7 1/4 for fifth and freshman Ryan Rayeske was sixth with a height of 13-1 1/2. Feuk ran 15.16 in the hurdles for second and Crogan was third with a time of 15.34. Freshman John Simons scored in a pair of events, taking third in the 5000m and sixth in the 1500m. In the 5000m, he crossed the line in 14:42.71. He ran a time of 3:53.11 in the 1500m, the third-best time in school history. Freshman Jake Reilly also ran in the event, finishing seventh with a time of 3:53.70--eighth-best in school history. |
