Jan. 21, 2014
MILWAUKEE - After the first time competing on the season, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track & field members Simbi Laaro and Aaron Dillon have been named the Horizon League Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced today.
The league honor is a first for Laaro, while this is the fifth time Dillon has been honored by the league.
Laaro broke a UWM and Klotsche Center record Friday at the John Tierney Triangular. The junior bolted out of the gates in her first race of the season, posting a winning time of 7.50 to break her own school and Klotsche record. That time is also currently the 48th best in the nation.
Dillon helped the Panthers to a pair of wins over UIC and Marquette Friday, taking first in triple jump and second in high jump. The Milwaukee native posted an impressive opening jump of 14.90m (48-10 ¾) in triple jump, coming within a foot of his personal best in the first meet of the year. That mark is also currently ranked 38th in the country. He also had an impressive leap in high jump, clearing 1.98m (6-6) to take second.
The Panthers return to the track next weekend, heading to the John Craft Invite hosted by Eastern Illinois next Saturday.
