Mleziva, Uphoff Once Again Pace Panthers At Lakefront Invitational
CHICAGO, Ill. (Sept. 27, 2008) - Junior Ryan Mleziva and freshman Dan Uphoff were once again at the head of the pack, leading the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team to a 13th-place finish at the 36th Annual Lakefront Invitational, hosted by Loyola Saturday afternoon. "Both the men's and women's team continue to make progress," head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Both teams showed aggressiveness from the start. For most of our runners, this is the biggest field of competitors that they have ever run against (330 women and 371 men). For the teams to be in the upper half of the field is significant." The Panthers scored 365 points for their standing in the 34-team race. The host Ramblers were the only other Horizon League school at the meet, taking seventh. Mleziva crossed the line in 26:16 for 55th place, finishing as the first Panther for the third-straight competition. As with the first two, Uphoff was within six seconds, taking 60th in 26:21. The duo has pair atop the team's finishers in at the first three meets, each time finishing between four and six seconds apart. Two more freshmen figured in the scoring in Ryan Baumgartner and Chris Schuenke. Baumgartner finished 75th with a time of 26:34, while Schuencke was 113th in 27:05. Junior Mike Sorenson rounded out the scorers just one second back of Schuencke, but in 116th place. Junior Eric Pitt placed 124th in 27:13 and freshman Tom Wells was 146th with a time of 27:36 to complete UWM's top seven.
The Panthers have three weeks off before returning to action at the Bradley Invitational Oct. 17 in Peoria, Ill. |
