Bruni, Paikowski Both Earn League Honors At Championships
Nov. 2, 2013
Boardman, Ohio - Sophomore Gerrit Bruni and freshman Vince Paikowski both earned All-Horizon League honors as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's cross country team placed fifth at the Horizon League Championships on a muddy Boardman High School Cross Country Course Saturday.
UWM finished with 89 points for fifth overall, just five points behind Oakland (84) and within striking distance of both third place (Wright State, 75) and second (Youngstown State, 72). Detroit ran away with the meet, taking first with 33 points.
"I'm really proud of the team's effort today," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Coming in, this isn't quite where we thought we would be, but I'm certainly not displeased with the effort. Having such a young team takes time to get experience at this level and to learn what it takes to win a championship or be in contention for it. We had a couple of all-conference finishers and both teams competed well. I think we just need experience.
"It's a process and I'm a patient person. I know that it just takes time. The teams had higher hopes and you want to go with that, but they'll be there in the future and I know they have the desire and work ethic to make it happen."
Bruni and Paikowski finished neck-and-neck to lead the way for Milwaukee, with Bruni coming in 13th overall with a time of 26:28.19 and Paikowski 14th at 26:28.90. Both Panthers earned All-League Second-Team honors for Milwaukee.
Also competing for UWM on the day were freshman Garrett Miller (37th, 27:21.73), sophomore Weston Brusky (39th, 27:32.30), junior Joseph Morgan (46th, 27:53.90), freshman RJ Salmon (62nd, 29:02.48), sophomore Reed Schmidt (64th, 29:15.55) and junior Anthony Buensuceso (73rd, 30:34.57).
Milwaukee returns to action in two weeks at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 15 in Madison, Wis.
