Panthers In Action At NCAA Regional This Weekend

Milwaukee coming off strong performances at the league championships

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Nov. 13, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams head to Lafayette, Ind., Saturday for the 2008 NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

The Panthers are coming off a pair of strong performances at the Horizon League Championships Nov. 2, where the women took second by just eight points and the men finished third.

Milwaukee's women's squad had three first-team all-league runners for the first time in school history on its way to a second-straight runner-up finish. UWM scored 43 points, just eight back of league-champion Loyola (35 points). Junior Abbie Zaspel and seniors Erin and Danielle Magargee finished together in fifth through seventh places.

Sophomore Tanaiya Fisher was an all-league second team runner, taking ninth place.

On the men's side, the Panthers entered the meet looking to improve on an eighth-place finish in 2007. They did just that, taking third behind all-league second-team runner junior Ryan Mleziva. Freshman Dan Uphoff was just seven seconds back of Mleziva, but missed out on all-league status by one place in 15th.

Last season, Milwaukee took 18th place on the women's side behind Holly Nearman's school-record 12th-place finish. Erin Magargee and Zaspel also ran strong, with Magargee taking 65th and Zaspel 77th.

UWM's men were 26th in the 20-team field. Junior Eric Pitt was the team's top finisher in 137th place.

The Panthers will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships as either a team or individually. The NCAA meet is scheduled for Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.
