Panthers Overpower Belgium U20 National Team, 92-70

LEUVEN, Belgium (May 23, 2008) - Junior Traci Edwards scored 27 and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 92-70 victory over the Belgium National Team Friday evening.

The Panthers moved to 2-0 on their trip through Europe behind dominating post play.

Aside from Edwards, Milwaukee also got 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots from Jenilee Klomstad. Junior Katie Fournier also tallied 14 points to go with six rebounds and two blocked shots. As a team, UWM had a 63-34 advantage on the glass and outscored Belgium, 58-28, in the paint.

Fanny Tirtiaux led Belgium with 14 points, six rebounds, seven steals and four blocked shots. Two more players reached double-figures, including one with 14 and another with 13.

UWM broke open a two-point game towards the end of the first quarter. Leading 17-15, the Panthers got back-to-back three-point plays from Edwards for a 23-15 advantage. Bringing a 23-18 lead out of the first intermission, Milwaukee proceeded to score the first seven points of the period for a commanding 30-18 lead.

Belgium would get no closer than eight the remainder of the contest. A 12-1 Panther run pushed their lead over 20 for the first time midway through the third quarter at 60-39. Fournier keyed the run with three-straight baskets. That lead would spread to 24 on two occasions.

Milwaukee shot 45.6 percent in the game, while holding its hosts to just 32.4 percent for the game. In the first half, Belgium managed to shoot just 24.3 percent.
