Panthers Picked Fifth In Horizon League Preseason Poll
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 27, 2009) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League standings this season, according to the league's preseason poll released today by the league office.
The Panthers garnered a first-place vote and 155 total points in the poll, which is voted on by league head coaches, sports information directors and media. Defending league champion Green Bay topped the poll with 266 points and 19 first-place votes. UWM and GB faced off in the 2009 league championship game.
Cleveland State collected four top votes and 243 points for second, while Butler was third with three first-place votes and 234 points. UIC finished just ahead of Milwaukee with 160 points.
Valparaiso was selected sixth with 145 points, while Wright State tallied 126 points for seventh. Despite earning the last first-place vote, Detroit was selected eighth with 103 points, ahead of Loyola in ninth (78 points) and Youngstown State in 10th (30).
Milwaukee returns a pair of starters in juniors Ashley Imperiale and Jenilee Klomstad, as well as its second-leading scorer and rebounder in junior Lindsay Laur. Imperiale was named to the league all-newcomer and all-tournament teams in her first season in a Panther uniform, while Laur was a candidate for the league's sixth player of the year award after averaging 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds off the bench.
