Panthers Sunk By Raiders On Last Second Goal
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 22, 2012) - Allie Metzler headed a corner kick into the goal with two seconds remaining in double overtime to send Wright State to a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
Despite owning the game's momentum for much of regulation and the overtime periods, there was little the Panthers (1-6-1, 0-1 Horizon) could do in the end to avoid their sixth-straight loss. The Raiders (5-2-3, 1-0 Horizon), meanwhile, won their first game against UWM in Milwaukee since 1989.
"It's a disappointing result. We wanted to come out with a better result in our first conference game," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "It was a disappointing first half, but I'm happy with how we picked up the energy in the second half and the first overtime. We are working to find some consistency and we will keep looking to get better."
Wright State seemed content for the draw in the final moments of the second overtime, but kicked into an extra gear after Ini Umotong sent a shot on the Panther net that keeper Jamie Forbes punched over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick, Sarah Gross raced into the corner and struck a quick ball that Metzler was able to head into the net with just two seconds remaining on the clock.
The Panthers had been in control for most of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net. They started their attacks early, forcing WSU keeper Brooke McCurdy to make five saves by halftime. In the second half, it was much of the same, as three more Milwaukee shots went on goal, but were stopped.
UWM finished with a 15-11 shot advantage and forced a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Forbes finished with three saves on the game, while McCurdy stopped nine in total. The Panther offense was paced by Krissy Dorre and Kelly Lewers, who each took three shots.
Milwaukee returns to action next week, taking a road trip to Detroit and Youngstown State. UWM plays at the Titans on Thursday and at the Penguins Saturday.
