SPRING MATCH REPORT: April 30 vs. DePaul/Northwestern
The Milwaukee women's soccer team completed the Spring 2011 Season with games against DePaul and Northwestern Saturday on Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium. The Panthers defeated the Blue Demons 1-0 and lost by the same score to Northwestern. In the opening game, the Panthers came out strong and were pushing the attack from the opening whistle. A combination play started with Keara Thompson in the midfield, who played it out to Helen Steinhauser. She then drove a low ball hard shot to the goalkeeper's left. When the keeper was only able to deflect it, the ball dropped into the path of a sliding Sammy Vovos for her first goal of the spring and an early lead. The Panthers dominated the most of the first half and had chances to increase the lead. In the second half, DePaul came back strong with a flurried finish and had a goal waved off for offside. Starting lineup vs. DePaul: Jamie Forbes, Mary Wandolowski, Hannah Kaul, Amy Kauffung, Caity Bestwina, Demi Price, Thompson, Steinhauser, Melanie Coderre, Vovos, Meghan Elvington.
The Panthers finished out the spring season with a 1-0 loss to Northwestern. The game was played at a very fast pace considering that both teams only had a hour break from their first games of the day. Each teams created quality chances in each half with the Panthers seeing more of the possession. An opportunistic goal from Northwestern came in the second half as one of the Wildcats dribbled into the box on the left side and served a ball over to the back post to an unmarked player, who then knocked it into the goal. That was enough to get the win. Starting lineup vs. Northwestern: Forbes, Sara Stern, Kaul, Wandolowski, Bestwina, Kauffung, Steinhauser, Thompson, Vovos, Laurel Ragalie, Sarah Hagen. - David Nikolic, Associate Head Coach |
