Panthers Top Preseason Poll For 11th-Straight Season
Aug. 12, 2010
MILWAUKEE - For the 11th-straight season, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team was picked first in the Horizon League preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced today.
The Panthers have won the last 10 league regular season championships--each year they have topped the poll.
There is reason for the high expectations for Milwaukee. The team is 63-2-3 in league play since 2000 and returns eight starters from last season when it became the first league school to post an 8-0 league record.
Horizon League Player of the Year Sarah Hagen heads the lists of returners after another standout season in 2009. She tied her own school and league-record with 24 goals to lead the nation. Entering her junior season, the Appleton, Wis., native has 48 goals and is just nine back of Lisa Krzykowski's school and league record of 57 career goals.
All told, 44 of the team's 49 goals scored last season return, including double-digit scorers in Keara Thompson (12 points), Laurel Ragalie (11) and Sarah Talbert (10). Thompson tied for second in the league with six assists, while Talbert was one of three Panthers named to the all-league first team and Nicole Sperl is back after being named to the all-league second team.
