Panthers Sweep Weekly League Awards
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 20, 2012) - Amy Kauffung and Jamie Forbes of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer teams were named the Horizon League Players of the Week for Aug. 20, the league office announced this morning. Kauffung was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Forbes picked up the Defensive Player of the Week award. The duo led Milwaukee to a 1-0-1 record last weekend, as the Panthers played to a scoreless draw with No. 24 South Carolina and defeated St. Bonaventure 4-0. Kauffung got her first collegiate points against the Bonnies Sunday. She picked up a goal on a low line drive to the bottom corner of the frame and did well to beat the SBU defense to set up Sammy Vovos' score 15 minutes later. For the weekend, she made a pair of starts, playing 200 minutes over the two games and finishing with a team-high seven shots. Forbes, the reigning League Goalkeeper and Co-Defensive Player of the Year, picked up where she left off in 2011. She opened the season with a pair of shutouts, making eight saves to keep the No. 24 Gamecocks scoreless and four more to keep St. Bonaventure off the board. She is the fourth keeper in school history to open a season with back-to-back shutouts. She was also the third, doing so as a freshman in 2009. That year, she had four-straight shutouts to start the season. The awards are the first of Kauffung's career and Forbes' third. Meanwhile, the Horizon League is in its first season of honoring an offensive and defensive player of the week. The league office previously honored one player of the week. The Panthers are back in action this weekend with their local derby Friday at Valley Fields against Marquette. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 kickoff, following the UWM/MU men's game at 6:30.
