Vovos Named League Offensive Player of the Week
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 29, 2012) - Sammy Vovos of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 29, the league office announced Monday. The award is the first of Vovos' career, while she is the fifth Panther to earn a weekly honor this season. Last week, Krissy Dorre was given the offensive award, following Amy Kauffung's selection Aug. 21. Jamie Forbes was also the Defensive Player of the Week Aug. 21, while Hannah Kaul earned the defensive award Oct. 8. Vovos made her first collegiate start Friday against Cleveland State and scored the game's first goal less than five minutes into the match. She then came back and added an assist in a 5-0 Milwaukee win. The victory clinched a share of a 13th-straight league regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in this week's Horizon League Championship. Vovos is now second on the team with a career-best four goals this season. Milwaukee hosts the league tourney Friday and Sunday at Engelmann Stadium. The Panthers begin play in the semifinals Friday, hosting the lowest remaining seed after Tuesday's first round. In the other semifinal match, No. 2 Detroit will take on the higher seed at 4 p.m. with the winners advancing to the championship Sunday at 1 p.m.
