MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Dec. 17, 2012) - The Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association will induct three people with strong ties to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's soccer programs into its hall of fame in 2013, the organization announced over the weekend.

Pete Knezic, Laura Moynihan and Dave Scherer are among the five newest honorees in the WSCA's Hall of Fame, set for induction Feb. 9 in Milwaukee. The class will bring the total number of inductees in the hall to 18, including former UWM men's soccer coaches Dan Harris (charter member, 2009) and Bob Gansler (2010) and former men's player Jim Launder (2010).

Knezic played for the Panthers from 1977-80 and left as the program's all-time leader in goals (49) and points (125). He was an All-American in 1979, scoring 15 goals and 39 points. After leaving UWM, he carved out a successful pro career, most notably with the Milwaukee Wave, where his number is retired. Knezic returned to campus as a head coach in 1989 for a two-year stint leading the women's soccer program. The team went 16-17-2 in that time, including a program record-tying 10 wins in 1989. Knezic has been the coaching director for FC Milwaukee since leaving UWM and has coached various high school and club teams throughout the area.

Moynihan took over the Panther women from Knezic in 1991 as the program's first full-time head coach, but she will be honored as the first woman inducted into the WSCA Hall of Fame for her work establishing girls soccer in the state of Wisconsin. She began her involvement in soccer as an administrator and was instrumental in starting the first soccer leagues for girls in the state of Wisconsin. As a coach, she founded and coached the first Tosa Kicks soccer teams and later helped establish the Wisconsin Girls Olympic Development Program, serving as its commissioner for eight years. Moynihan passed away in 1992 and became the first woman inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Hall of Fame the next year. Then, in 1998, the United States Youth Soccer Association named the National Championship Trophy for U17 girls, The Laura Moynihan Cup. Prior to the 2011 season, the soccer facility on campus was renamed Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium.

Scherer was a three-year letterwinner on the men's soccer team at UWM from 1976-79, serving as a team captain on the program's 1979 NCAA Tournament team. That squad still holds school records for goals (87) and shutouts (12) in a season. After his playing career, he embarked on a nearly 30-year coaching career in the area at both the high school and club levels.
