Nov. 14, 2012
MILWAUKEE - After successfully defending both Stevens Point Border Battle titles over the weekend, senior Sam Niesen and sophomore Sierra Townsend have been named the Horizon League Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon. This is the second time Townsend has won the award while it is a career-first for Niesen.
Niesen won the 200 IM Friday with a time of 1:58.50, took the top spot in the 100 backstroke Saturday in 53.23 and helped the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.29) and 400 medley relay (3:31.13) to first place showings to help Milwaukee to its seventh-straight title at the Border Battle. The Middleton native also came in second in the 200 backstroke.
Townsend also had an impressive weekend, starting with a strong showing in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore beat out 48 other swimmers with a time of 24.74 seconds to take the top spot in the sprint. She also played a big role in numerous relays, helping the Panthers to wins in the 200 free relay (1:38.49), 400 free relay (3:35.89) and the 400 medley relay (3:56.30).
The Sturgeon Bay native also came in second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.70.
Milwaukee will take a break from action for Thanksgiving before returning Nov. 30 for the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational.
