March 29, 2013
VALPARAISO, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team split a pair of Horizon League road matches Friday in northwest Indiana.
The Panthers (9-7, 2-1 Horizon) started the day with a 6-1 loss to perennial league power UIC before bouncing back for a 7-0 victory over Valparaiso.
In the evening win over the Crusaders, UWM easily won the doubles point before sweeping through the singles matches. The only test for Milwaukee came in the fourth singles spot, where Christina Colarossi had to claim a third-set tiebreaker to finish off a victory. Otherwise, freshman Dana Shannon won convincingly in the top spot while Chelsea Bailey, Kristin Kurer, Brittany Skemp and Maria Zompolas claimed straight-set wins.
On the doubles side, the top tandem of Maddy Soule and Colarossi teamed up for an 8-1 victory while Skemp and Bailey captured an 8-0 win in the third spot.
Earlier in the day against the Flames, Milwaukee dropped the doubles point but did claim a victory in the top singles spot as Soule handled Haley Craig in three sets. The Panthers nearly pulled out two other singles victories, but Shannon and Bailey each fell in three-set affairs.
The Panthers now return home for their next four league contests. Milwaukee starts the homestand by welcoming Cleveland State (Saturday) and Youngstown State (Sunday) to North Shore Elite next weekend.
