Panthers Stay Perfect With Sweep Over Valpo
April 6, 2014
MILWAUKEE - Fresh off one of the biggest wins in program history one day earlier, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team swept through Valparaiso, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the North Shore Elite Sports Club.
With the win, UWM improves to an outstanding 5-0 in league play and 11-7 overall. It is the seventh-straight win for the league-leading Panthers and the 10th win of the season at home. Valparaiso, which had claimed its first-ever Horizon League win in program history one day earlier, now falls to 2-16 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Milwaukee dominated from start to finish Sunday, winning each match in straight sets. In fact, three Panthers won without even dropping a point.
Diana Tokar, Alysa Straub and Kristin Kurer all won 6-0, 6-0 to claim wins in the one, five and six spots. Christina Colarossi also controlled her match in the third spot with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Aerielle Pendleton grabbed the fourth spot at 6-2, 6-0 and Hayley Marshall battled to a win in the second spot, 6-1, 6-4, for the closest match of the day.
UWM also swept all three matches in doubles play to take the opening point. Tokar and Pendleton took down Kristin Zakiewicz and Kaitlyn Hamel, 8-3, and Marshall and Straub cruised to an 8-0 win in the top-two spots. With the point already in hand, Colarossi and Kurer fought hard to claim an 8-5 victory and complete the sweep of the Crusaders.
Milwaukee returns to the court next weekend with a trip to Ohio. The Panthers will take on Youngstown State Saturday evening and then make a quick turnaround with a Sunday morning match at Cleveland State.
