Panthers Wrap Up Strong Season With Win Over Green Bay
April 26, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee captured fifth place in the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over Green Bay late Saturday afternoon at North Central High School.
In the process, the Panthers (14-12) set a Division I school record for wins. Plus, the fifth-place finish equals the second-best in school history.
Milwaukee quickly claimed the doubles point and then was dominant in three singles matches to secure the victory.
Jenna Felsher captured a straight-sets win in roughly 40 minutes at #6 singles, with Kari Kastenholz wrapping up another straight-sets victory moments later in the #3 slot. Then, Sammi Schoen finished off the match with a final straight-sets win at #4 singles.
"It is a good way to end another good season," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "I think it is two good seasons in a row and it is nice to add another victory to our total from last season. A fifth-place finish again in the league is solid and we saw a lot of good things again this year."
The win was UWM's second in a week over its in-state rival and marked the third-straight win by the Panthers over Green Bay after going winless against the Phoenix in 25 tries between 1990 and 2005.
Plus, with UWM's first round win Friday over Wright State, the Panthers have won two matches at the league tournament for the second-straight year after going six-straight years without winning a postseason contest.
"We have a lot of positives to build on," McCaskill said. "We bring all of our key people back and we are in good position to continue to build this program and continue to improve."
