Drvaric, Kastenholz Claim Doubles Crown At Ball State Invitational

Gow also makes finals in singles action

Sept. 27, 2008

MUNCIE, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team captured a doubles title and advanced a player to the finals in singles action during the final day of the Ball State Invitational Saturday.

The tandem of Kari Kastenholz and Kelly Drvaric captured a pair of wins Saturday to take that doubles crown, while freshman Megan Gow won a Saturday morning semifinal contest before falling in the final match.

In all, UWM wound up with nine singles victories and six doubles wins over the two-day event.

"We had a lot of good efforts and it was a good weekend," UWM head coach Matt McCaskill said. "It is great for Kelly and Kari they were able to win in doubles and Megan really played well in getting to a final in singles. There was a lot of good competition in this tournament and it is a lot of tennis packed into two days, so it is good training for us."

Drvaric and Kastenholz first claimed an 8-4 win over a tandem from Bradley Saturday morning and then pulled out an 8-3 win over a pair from Northern Illinois in the finals.

Meanwhile, Gow beat Alex Forsyth of IPFW, 6-2, 6-1, to get to the finals of Flight C before falling to Cam Thompson of Butler, 6-4, 6-1.

Drvaric and Kastenholz also each split singles matches in the consolation bracket of Flight A Saturday, with Kastenholz claiming a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicole Miller of Bradley 6-1, 6-2 and Drvaric taking a 6-2, 7-5 win from Georgina Thomson of Ball State.
