Feb. 16, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team opens Horizon League play by hosting Green Bay Friday.
The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at LeClub.
The Panthers (4-3) won one of three matches this past weekend, beating IUPUI while falling to Marquette and Drake. The contest with Drake was a tight one and an impressive performance by the Panthers against a top Missouri Valley Conference foe. UWM won the doubles point but could only pull out two of the singles matches in falling just short.
Over the first month of the spring season, Maddy Soule and Chelsea Bailey are leading the team with five singles wins apiece. Soule and Christina Colarossi have teamed up for a 5-2 record in doubles play, while the tandem of Kristin Kurer and Kelly Fritz is 5-0.
As a team this spring, the Panthers are 25-7 in singles play and 14-7 in doubles action.
Green Bay is 0-5 this spring, having lost four matches by a 7-0 score while also dropping a 4-3 decision to IUPUI. Senior Morgan Weuve, junior Rebecca Nelson and freshman Samantha Iwen have the three singles victories this spring for Green Bay, while Weuve and Jennifer Bradfield have teamed up for the lone doubles victory. Green Bay finished eighth in the Horizon League last year.
This is the first of two Horizon League matches this month for Milwaukee, which will host Valparaiso next week. Then, the Panthers will play their final six league matches in April.
