Panthers Wrap Up Regular Season With Pair Of Home Contests
April 15, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team returns to its homecourt for the final week of the regular season. UWM hosts UIC Wednesday afternoon before welcoming in-state rival Green Bay to Milwaukee on Saturday.
The Flames will provide a stiff test for a Panther squad looking to break a two-match losing streak. UIC has won 11-straight league titles and 98-consecutive league dual matches.
This season, the Flames are 11-5 overall and 5-0 in league play. Ilinca Cristescu was named the league player of the week earlier this season and has played at #1 singles most of the season for the Flames. Wednesday's contest is the first of three league matches UIC will play this week, with a key contest against league co-leader Butler looming this weekend.
Green Bay has just two victories this season, with its lone league win coming against Valparaiso two weeks ago. Three players share team-high honors with three singles victories while the Phoenix have claimed just 10 of 48 doubles matches in dual competition.
UWM (11-10, 3-3), meanwhile, suffered through a disappointing road trip this past weekend, losing at Cleveland State Saturday before falling at Youngstown State Sunday. The Panthers are still looking to secure a top-five regular season finish in league play, with a finish anywhere between fourth and sixth place possible for UWM.
Following this weekend's action, UWM will head to Indianapolis for the Horizon League Championships. The Panthers will likely open the tournament with a first-round match Friday afternoon. The league champion is crowned on Sunday, with all matches played at North Central High School, weather permitting.
