Women's Track Wins EIU Quad

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's track and field team came away from the Eastern Illinois Quadrangular meet Saturday with a first-place finish, defeating the hosts from EIU, Western Illinois, Northern Illinois and Bradley. Christine Wampach, Lynda Thiel, Stephanie Kenesie and Nicole Frey each collected wins for the Panther women on the day.

Frey took top honors in the 200m dash with a time of 25.90, and was second in the 60m dash in 7.91. She was joined in the 60 by Sara Vanderloop, who finished fourth in 8.03, and Laura Diers, who was seventh in 8.08. Vanderloop also finished third in the 200m in 26.24, with Teresa Braunreiter in seventh in 26.62.

Kenesie was first in the long jump, measuring 18'4 1/4", and added a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles in 9.15. She was also third in the triple jump with an effort of 35'11 1/4". Three other Panthers placed in the 60m hurdles, as Kristy Naef was third in 9.37, Jill Naus was fourth in 9.38 and Katie Slamka was sixth in 9.51. Joining Kenesie in the triple jump was Kalin Konop, who finished sixth with a jump of 34'10 1/4".

Thiel also had a strong meet, winning the pole vault and the high jump, while also finishing third in the long jump. In the pole vault, she cleared 10'11 3/4", while clearing a personal-best 5'5 3/4" in the high jump. Thiel's long jump effort of 17'1/2" came in her first ever competition in the event at UWM, and was good enough for third. Also placing in the long jump were Kristy Naef, fourth with a jump of 16'10 3/4", Michelle Fritsch in sixth with a best effort of 16'7 3/4" and Konop in seventh, jumping 16'5". Naef was also fourth in the high jump, clearing 4'11 3/4", while Allison Schnelle cleared the same height but was sixth on misses. Nikki Castona joined Thiel in placing in the pole vault, winding up fifth after clearing 8'6 1/4".

 

 

Wampach, meanwhile, won the women's 3000m run in a time of 10:09.57, the fifth-best time in school history in the event. Alison Shattuck was fifth in the same event, finishing in 10:38.45. In other running events, Katie Seep was second in the 400m, finishing in 58.77, while Teresa Braunreiter also broke one minute in the event, finishing sixth in 59.86. In the 800m, Tenia Fisher was sixth in 2:23.05, with Katie Anderson seventh in 2:24.16. The women's mile relay team of Braunreiter, Fisher, Amber Perri and Seep was third in 4:03.28.

The Panthers return to action next weekend, as they travel to Indianapolis on Saturday for the Smith Barney Invitational.
