Underclassmen shine at Notre Dame's Mayo Invite
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (Feb. 6, 2010) - Freshman Samia Taylor took seventh in the triple jump and two more Panthers posted top-10 times to highlight this weekend's participation by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team at the Mayo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
Freshman Samia Taylor was Milwaukee's top finisher with a seventh-place showing in the triple jump. She leapt 39-5, just off her school-record personal best of 39-9 3/4. Senior Beth Zimmerman, also competed in the event, taking 27th with a jump of 36-5 3/4. In the long jump, Zimmerman was 30th with a distance of 17-10 3/4.
Sophomore Katie Duchow competed in both the 60m and 200m alongside senior Kelsey Conrad. In the 200m, Conrad placed 23rd with a time of 25.23, just ahead of Duchow in 26th in 25.26, the sixth-best time in school history. Duchow ran 7.86 for 32nd in the preliminaries of the 60m. Conrad was 40th in 7.97.
Freshman Flo Mafany ran the seventh-best time in school history in the 400m. She finished 45th with a time of 58.08. Junior Angie Kaufmann was 47th in the event with a time of 58.17 and sophomore Calanetta Burrows was 58th in 1:00.23.
Mafany and Burrows also ran in the prelims of the 60m hurdles. Freshman Chia Okonkwo led the way in the event, taking 20th in 9.04. Burrows was 31st in 9.32 and Mafany 42nd in 9.63.
The Panthers return to action at the Iowa State Cyclone Classic next weekend, Thursday through Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
