Feb. 10, 2012
Allendale, Mich. - Samia Taylor won the triple jump, Shelby Schaal and Laura Hamel finished second and third in the pentathlon and six athletes recorded personal records for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team in the first day of action at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich. on Friday.

"All in all it was a really good day for us," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "We had a few ups and downs. Durell (Busby) breaking the school record (in men's 60m hurdles) and ranking high nationally is obviously pretty huge. As a coach, you're always looking at where people can get better, but overall it was a really good day and we'll get right back at it tomorrow."
It was another outstanding performance for a pair of Milwaukee seniors in the pentathlon. Hamel recorded a personal record score of 3,241 points, improving on her fifth-place standing in school history. In fact, Hamel also had personal bests in the 800m (2:26.17) and high jump (1.66m) during the five-event competition.
Schaal took second in four of the five events to finish second overall with 3,552 points. She also had PR`s in the 60m hurdles (9.11) and 800m (2:19.99) portions of the event to lead the way for UWM.
Lauren Grant continued to shave time off her fourth-place all-time standing in the 400m, coming in at 57.09 for 13th in the race.
In the 60m hurdles, Chiamaka Okonkwo again took time off her season best, crossing the line just a hair shy of her own school record at 8.70 for fourth overall. Calanetta Burrows also had a strong showing, finishing the race in 9.00 for 13th.
Sophomore Simbi Laaro again came close to taking more time off her own school record in the 60m with a sprint of 7.59 to finish second in prelims.
One week after breaking the school record in weight throw, sophomore Nancy Harmon took 10th in the event with a toss of 52-2 3/4 (15.92m).
