Nearman, Saarinen Lead Panthers At Iowa State Classic
AMES, Iowa (Feb. 15, 2008) - Junior Holly Nearman posted the third-best 5000m time in school history and junior Jenni Saarinen took fourth in the pentathlon to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's track and field teams at the start of the Iowa State Classic. Nearman competed in the seeded 5000m and ran a time of 17:21.08 for the third-best time in school history. She and junior Jenni Saarinen were Milwaukee's two top-10 finishers on the women's side. Nearman was 10th in the 5000m, while Saarinen finished fourth in the pentathlon with 3,652 points. Saarinen actually got the meet started with the multi-events on Thursday, with the remainder of the meet getting underway Friday. Junior Beth Zimmerman also posted a top-20 finish, taking 14th in the long jump. She leapt 18-5 in the event. Two more Panthers posted personal bests that rank them among Milwaukee's all-time bests. Junior Jes Weyandt tied for 21st in the pole vault with a final height of 11-6 1/4. While it was a PR, she remained fifth in school history. Sophomore Kelsey Conrad also remained fifth with a personal best when she took 40th in the 200m with a time of 25.26. The Iowa State Classic continues Saturday.
