Panthers Win Nine Events, Sweep UWM Panther Tune-Up
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 19, 2010) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team won nine of 14 events run to post a perfect 4-0 record at the UWM Panther Tune-Up Friday evening at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers handily defeated league foes UIC, 85-36, and Loyola, 85-44. UWM also scored wins over Chicago State, 98-17, and Marquette, 96-23, to go to 22-1 all-time at the UWM Panther Tune-Up.
Freshman Chia Okonkwo tied the Klotsche Center record in the 60m hurdles, senior Jamie Woods broke her own school weight throw record for the second time this season and freshman Sarah Finer set a personal record in the pole vault by 11 inches.
Okonkwo won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.96 to tie the fieldhouse mark. She also lowered her personal best in the event by 0.02 seconds and remains fourth in school history. Fellow freshmen Flo Mafany and Moriah Myles took second and third in the event. Mafany ran 9.03 and Myles a personal-best 9.27.
Woods, who also won the shot put, threw 54-6 1/2 in the weight throw to top the mark of 52-2 3/4 she set Jan. 23 vs. Marquette. She placed second in the event on the day. In the shot put, she tossed 42-6 for the win. Finer cleared 11-7 3/4 in the pole vault to finish second. She had entered the meet with a personal-best height of 10-8 3/4 and now sits tied for fourth in school history. Sophomore Courtney Fisher and freshman Chantel McConville tied for third in the event with a height of 11-1 3/4, a PR for McConville by three inches.
Senior Kelsey Conrad led the way for Milwaukee, scoring wins in both the 60m and 200m. In the 60m, she ran 7.72, while, in the 200m, she went 25.18. Milwaukee also posted wins and took the top three sports in both the long jump and 400m.
Senior Jenni Parish leapt 19-0 3/4 in the long jump to lead the way and slide up to sixth in school history in the event. Sophomore Shelby Schaal was second with a jump of 17-10 1/4 and Myles cleared 17-6 3/4 for third. Junior Angie Kaufmann led the top-three contingent in the 400m, crossing the line in a season-best 57.43. Sophomores Erika Hanson, in 59.58, and Calanetta Burrows, with a time of 59.96, rounded out the trio.
Freshmen provided wins in two more events, as Samia Taylor topped the triple jump field and Elise Sigg the mile run. In the triple jump, Taylor went 39-6 1/2 for the win, just ahead of senior Beth Zimmerman at 39-2 1/2 in second place. Sigg ran a strong mile time of 5:09.21 to edge junior Tanaiya Fisher's runner-up time of 5:10.68.
Sophomore Ashlee Mongoven rounded out the winners for UWM, tying for the top spot in the high jump. She cleared 5-1 to tie Marquette's Marisa Handley.
The UWM Panther Tune-Up was the Panthers' final preparation for the 2010 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 27-28, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
