Frey, Naef Set School Marks Friday
Feb. 22, 2003
MILWAUKEE - Nicole Frey and Kristy Naef each set a school record Friday night as the Panthers held their final preparation for the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships, which UWM will host Mar. 1 and 2 at the Klotsche Center. Frey set a new school and Klotsche Center mark in the 200m dash, finishing in 25.18, breaking the old school mark of 25.21, set by Nicole Wee in 2001, and the old fieldhouse mark of 25.40, set by Marquette's Flatria Horne in 1999. Frey also finished third in the 60m dash, finishing in a personal best time of 7.83. Naef, meanwhile, finished the 60m hurdles in 9.05, breaking the old school mark of 9.05, set by Andrea Thibeaudeau in 2000. This also marked the first time that the 60m hurdles have been contested in the Klotsche Center, giving Naef that record as well. The women's team looked to be in fine shape heading into next weekend's championships, as many Panthers turned in season and career bests. Laura Diers finished the 60m dash in fourth place in 7.99 seconds, and also finished second in the 200m in 26.16. Iris Perez also turned in a fourth place finish in the 200m in 26.46. Sara Vanderloop won the 400m in 58.41, while Katie Seep was second in 58.94 and Teresa Braunreiter was third in 59.37. In the women's mile, Christine Wampach was second in 5:08.65.
Joining Naef in the hurdles was Stephanie Kenesie in second in 9.10 and Katie Slamka in third in 9.40. Jill Naus also finished fourth in the event in 9.43. In addition, the women's mile relay team of Vanderloop, Braunreiter, Tenia Fisher and Seep won the event in 3:58.87.
In the field events, Lynda Thiel picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the high jump and the pole vault. Thiel cleared 5'6" to win the high jump, and also measured out at 11' in the pole vault to capture that title. Naef finished third in the high jump after clearing 5'2", followed by Allison Schnelle in fourth with a best height of 5'. Michelle Fritsch took third in the pole vault after clearing 8'6". Stephanie Kenesie won the triple jump and the long jump, measuring at 5.59m in the long jump and 11.09 in the triple. Kalin Konop was second in the long jump at 5.04m and third in the triple jump after jumping 10.69m. Michelle Fritsch took third in the triple jump with a best effort of 10.88m. Schnelle was fourth in the long jump after jumping 4.98m. The women's team returns to the Klotsche Center Saturday for the first of two days of the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
