Panthers Win Two Events, Take Third At Central Collegiate Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Juniors Katie Slamka and Stephanie Ray each won event to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team to a third-place finish at the Central Collegiate Championships on a windy Saturday afternoon in Champaign, Ill. The Panthers scored 84 points at the 12-team meet, while Illinois State (192 points) and Northern Illinois (140) took the top two places. Slamka led the way, winning the 400m hurdles and adding a second-place 100m hurdle event. In the 400m, she crossed the line with a time of 1:04.85, while sophomore Taryn Cozine placed second in 1:05.10 and sophomore Amy Sunby took eighth in 1:13.24. Slamka also ran to a time of 15.11 in the shorter hurdle event. In the pole vault, Ray cleared 11-9 3/4 for the win. The Panthers also got second-place showings from sophomore Timeka Walker, junior Griffin McNulty and a third-place finish by junior Katie Anderson. Walker crossed the line in the 100m in 11.97, while McNulty completed the 800m in 2:18.79 as the runner-up. Senior Teresa Braunreiter, who placed seventh in 2:24.29, and sophomore Kris Gasser, who was eighth in 2:25.84, also scored in the event. Milwaukee's first competitor in the 3000m steeplechase this season, Anderson posted a time of 11:32.20 in taking third. Walker also led three UWM scorers in the 200m, taking fifth in 25.75. Junior Iris Perez was sixth with a time of 25.87, while senior Sara Vanderloop ran a time of 26.20 for eighth. Freshman Shannon Buttchen also placed well, taking fourth in the 400m with a time of 59.24
Milwaukee returns to action next weekend, April 28-30, at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. |
