Zaspel Wins 5000m At Marquette Invite

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 24, 2010) - Senior Abbie Zaspel won the 5000m at the Marquette Invitational Saturday to highlight the final day of a busy weekend for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team.

The Panthers also completed the final day of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and were at the nearby Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, Friday.

Zaspel crossed the line in 17:40.85 to win the 5k at Marquette and came away with the 10th-best time in school history.

Milwaukee got a pair of top-three finishers in the long jump, with senior Jenni Parish taking second with a leap of 17-0 1/2. Freshman Erika Suchla was third at 15-11 1/2. Suchla was also second in the triple jump with a leap of 36-0.

UWM also received top-five finishes from senior Jamie Woods and sophomore Beonca Mitchell. Woods threw 144-6 in the hammer throw for fifth and Mitchell was fifth in the 800m, running 2:26.39.

In Iowa, senior Beth Zimmerman took second in the long jump at the Janvrin Open Friday and was 11th in the triple jump at Drake with a leap of 40-3 1/4. In the long jump, senior Kory Olson was third with a jump of 17-4 1/4, while freshman Samia Taylor was 21st in the triple jump with a leap of 37-8 1/2.

The Panthers return to action next weekend at the Horizon League Championships, April 30-May 2 in Lisle, Ill.
