Wauwatosa, Wis. - Laura Hamel and Shelby Schaal had dominating performances and sit atop the leader board in the heptathlon in the first day of action for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track & field team at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships at Wisconsin Lutheran College's Raabe Stadium.

Hamel had a phenomenal performance in the high jump portion of the event, easily winning after breaking the school record and tying the league's top mark with an outstanding leap of 5-8 1/2 (1.74m). The senior also set season-best marks in the shot put and 100m hurdles and sits in second with 2,801 points and three events to go.

Schaal, the defending heptathlon champion, currently sits in first after four events with 2,851 points. The Waterford, Wis. native also just missed taking the top spot in the open javelin competition, finishing with a season-best mark of 131-3 (40.01m), just four inches shy of the top spot.

In the 10,000m, freshman Katy Koch came in 11th.

After one day of events, Milwaukee sits in third place with eight points. Youngstown State currently is in first with 20 points. Loyola is in second with 18, Butler is tied with UWM in third at eight, and Wright State (six) and Valparaiso (two) round out the scoring.

Day two of the three-day meet starts Saturday with multi events at 9 a.m. Field events are set to start at 1:30 and running events are slatted for 3 p.m.
