MADISON, Wis. - Junior Katie Slamka won the 100m hurdles and posted a third-place finish in the javelin to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team at the Wisconsin Twilight Saturday in Madison, Wis. In addition to being the team's lone outdoor meet in the state of Wisconsin, the Twilight also served as the Panthers' final tune up before the league meet next weekend.

Slamka paced the field in the sprint hurdle event with a personal-best time of 14.67, while junior Jodi Hrdina was fifth in 15.43. In the javelin, Slamka threw 112-10. Hrdina well in this event as well, taking fifth in 101-9. Sophomore Taryn Cozine took second in the other hurdle event, the 400m. While Cozine crossed the line in 1:04.14, sophomore Amy Sunby placed sixth in 1:08.68.

Freshman Joy VanLaanen had a busy meet, running with the 4x100m relay and posting top-10 finishes in both the long jump and pole vault. With the relay, she was joined by senior Sara Vanderloop, junior Iris Perez and sophomore Timeka Walker in taking third with a time of 47.89. In the long jump, VanLaanen leapt 17-3 1/2 for seventh, while also taking ninth in the pole vault with a final height of 10-6.

In the individual sprints, Walker took third in the 100m with a time of 12.12, ahead of sophomore Marcia Roundtree in 10th in 12.52. Perez led the way in the 200m, finishing in 25.07 for third. Vanderloop completed the event ninth in 25.91.

Milwaukee posted five top-10 finishers over the 400m and 800m events. Junior Amber Perri placed sixth in the 400m with a time of 58.58, ahead of freshman Shannon Buttchen in eighth (58.66) and senior Teresa Braunreiter in ninth (58.67). In the 800m, junior Katie Anderson was seventh in 2:17.15, as classmate Tenia Fisher crossed the line 10th in 2:18.29.

 

 

The Panthers have completed their final tune up for the Horizon League Championships, May 12-13, in Indianapolis, Ind. Milwaukee is looking to claim its fourth outdoor league title, and first since 2003, after taking second last season.
