Coach Corfeld on the Weekend's Meet
"We have built momentum from our first two meets heading into this weekend at Madison. We look forward to making the most of that momentum and continue to put up strong marks in the league, region and country."
Last Time Out: Panthers Sweep Marquette
Milwaukee swept its dual meet with crosstown rival Marquette last Saturday, posting its second-straight combined indoor win over the Golden Eagles. The men's team was victorious, 79.5-58.5, winning nine events, led by Jake Whitewater's two wins. The Panther women edged MU, 71-69, pulling through with a win in the 4x400m relay to break a 66-66 tie.
Another Meet, More Records
Two more school records fell last Saturday, making three UWM marks that have fallen over the first two meets of 2011. Chia Okonkwo lowered the 60m hurdle standard 0.15 seconds from 8.91 to 8.76. She also broke her own Klotsche Center record of 8.96 in the event. Samia Taylor broke her own triple jump record and the fieldhouse mark, going 40-10 1/4 in the event. Her precious mark was 40-9 1/2, while she handily reset the Klotsche standard of 40-0 1/4.
Durell Busby broke the school 60m hurdles mark on the men's side in Milwaukee's first trip to Madison, Jan. 15, at the Badger Track Classic. He ran 8.08 to topple the mark of 8.10.
Weekly Winners
Despite having competed at just two meets, the Panthers have already claimed five Horizon league Athlete of the Week awards. Samia Taylor was honored as the women's field athlete for the second-straight week this week, while Jake Whitewater was the men's field recipient. After the season-opener, Taylor, Elise Sigg (women's track) and Durell Busby (men's track) were all honored.
America's Top 20
While setting school and fieldhouse marks, Samia Taylor's triple jump is also among the top 20 triple jumps in the nation this week. She entered the week tied for 19th in the nation.
Next Time Out
There is no rest for Milwaukee, as it returns to action next weekend at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational. The meet gets underway Friday, Feb. 4, in South Bend, Ind., and concludes Saturday.
Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner
The UWM men have 11 event wins over the first two meets, while the women have won 10 events. Jake Whitewater has three wins over the long and triple jump events, while Elise Sigg is a perfect 2-for-2 with wins in the 3000m (Jan. 15) and mile (Jan. 22). Samia Taylor is perfect in the triple jump after two meets, as is Durell Busby in the men's 60m hurdles.
Twelve other Panthers have won an event already this season.
