Milwaukee Hosts Lone Home Meet Friday At Klotsche
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 19, 2009) - With one week remaining before the 2009 Horizon League Indoor Championships, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team returns to town to host its only home meet of the season, the UWM Panther Tune-Up Friday at the Klotsche Center. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m. with the start of field events while running events will get underway at approximately 6:30 p.m. Milwaukee will be joined by league foes UIC and Loyola, Chicago State and Milwaukee School of Engineering. UWM is coming off a strong performance at the Iowa State Cyclone Classic, where a number of Panthers set personal bests. Junior Kelsey Conrad ran a PR of 24.86 in the 200m to miss the school record in the event by just 0.05 seconds. Senior Elizabeth Brothen in the 5000m, juniors Abbie Zaspel in the 5000m, Emily Budde in the pentathlon and junior Reigna Pierce in the long jump, sophomore Tanaiya Fisher in the mile and freshmen Katie Duchow in the 200m and Ashlee Mongoven in the high jump also set personal records. The UWM Panther Tune-Up features dual meet scoring with each of the teams going against each other. Milwaukee has posted a 15-1 record at the meet since 2004, with the lone loss coming to Wisconsin in 2006. Loyola and UIC have competed at the meet in each of the last five meets, while Chicago State will be competing for the third time. Last season, Beth Zimmerman and Kelsey Conrad highlighted the meet, winning two events apiece. Zimmerman broke a school record in the triple jump and was within 1/4 of an inch off the long jump mark. Conrad, meanwhile, won both the 60m and 200m events.
This week's meet serves as a final tune-up for the Panthers before heading to Indianapolis next weekend for the league championships. Milwaukee is in search of its first indoor title since back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007, while having finished in the top two at each of the last six indoor meets and 11 of the last 12. UWM has posted championships in 2000-01 and 2003. Its five titles are a league record. The 2009 Horizon League Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 28-March 1 in Indianapolis, Ind. |
