League Champion Panthers Open Outdoor Slate This Weekend
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (March 25, 2009) - The 2009 Horizon League Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will open its outdoor season this weekend, traveling to Southern Illinois' Spring Classic Friday and Saturday in Carbondale. While the bulk of the team heads to SIU this weekend, a select few men's and women's athletes will head to the Raleigh Relays to compete in distance events. The Panthers claimed their third league indoor title in four seasons to close out the team portion of its indoor slate. They won the league meet handily with 165 points, 45 better than second-place Youngstown State (120). Junior Kelsey Conrad won three events and ran with the second-place 4x400m relay to lead the squad. Junior Erin Havener remained perfect in league pole vault competitions, while junior Emily Budde won the pentathlon and junior Reigna Pierce topped the triple jump to round out the individual champs. Conrad's outstanding season did not end their. At the league meet, she won the 60m, 200m with a school and league-record time of 24.70 and the distance medley, helping on a school mark of 12:12.77. Then, at the NCAA Qualifier at Iowa State, she broke another school record, this time in the 400m. She crossed the line in 55.51. Head coach Pete Corfeld was named Coach of the Year for both the women and the men at the league meet. Then, he was one of five nominees for USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Men's Head Coach of the Year. Associate head coach Jason Francis was one of five nominees for the region's assistant coach of the year award.
