Panthers Sweep Four Horizon League Awards For This Week
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 8, 2009) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's track and field team swept the Horizon League's four weekly awards for April 6, the league office announced today. Senior Holly Nearman repeated as the league women's track athlete of the week, while junior Quinn Mongoven earned the men's field athlete of the week award for the second-straight week. Junior Tyler Bucholz was also named the men's track athlete of the week and junior Reigna Pierce picked up an award as the women's field honoree. Nearman led the Panthers at the Big Blue Classic, winning the 1500m. She crossed the line in 4:37.64 to do so. The award is the fifth of her career. Mongoven has been the league's field athlete of the week for the last three weeks, dating back to the indoor season. He tied the school record in the high jump for the second-straight meet last weekend at the Florida Relays. He cleared 6-10 3/4 and took fourth place. That height is also the qualifying height for the NCAA regionals. Bucholz qualified for the NCAA regionals with a time of 21.31 in the 200m at the Florida Relays. He placed 12th in the event and ran the fastest time in the league by over a half second. The Crystal, Minn., native also ran with the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The 4x100m relay was 16th in 41.85 and 4x400m was 14th in 3:12.76. Pierce placed 13th in the triple jump at the Florida Relays. She leapt 38-6 1/4 in the event, which is the best triple jump in the Horizon League this season. Milwaukee has excelled during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, garnering 13 athlete of the week awards, combined. Since the Horizon League added awards for both track and field athletes this year, UWM has swept both awards twice on the women's side and three times on the men's side, while claiming all four awards twice.
The Panthers are in action again this weekend, heading across town for a dual meet with Marquette. Action gets underway at Melvin "Bus" Shimek Memorial Track and Field Facility at Valley Fields at 2 p.m. |
