AUSTIN, Texas (May 27, 2010) - Tyler Bucholz of the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee got one step closer to the NCAA Championships,
qualifying for the quarterfinals in the 400m Friday at the NCAA West Track
and Field Regional Meet.
He placed 24th in the event with a time of 47.07, punching his ticket to
Saturday's quarterfinal by 0.001 over 25th place. After the quarterfinals,
comes the semifinals at the NCAA Championships, June 9-12, in Eugene, Ore.
"Tyler was a little rusty, but he ran well and qualified for the quarters in
a tight race," UWM head coach Pete Corfeld said. "He goes to the line
tomorrow with an opportunity to go to nationals. I know he has more in him
and he believes it, too."
After the quarterfinals of the 400m Saturday, Bucholz will also be competing
in the first round of the 200m.
The Panthers had three more runners competing on the first day of the
regional meet. In the 400m hurdles, Flo Mafany was 44th in a time of
1:03.16. Calanetta Burrows was less than a second back in 45th place with a
time of 1:03.27.
"This was a good experience for younger hurdle runners," Corfeld said. "They
got experience at such a high level. This meet is like a mini nationals
meet, unlike the old regional format. Half the country is here and every one
of our athletes is representing UWM well."
Kelsey Conrad also ran in the 100m, taking 47th with a time of 12.21. She
will compete in the 200m first round Friday evening as well.
Quinn Mongoven will compete in the high jump Friday and Beth Zimmerman will
compete in the triple jump Saturday.
