Nearman Named Horizon League Athlete Of The Year

Junior distance runner came within one place of qualifying for NCAA Championships

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (June 25, 2008) - Junior Holly Nearman of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team has been named the Horizon League Female Outdoor Athlete of the Year, the league office announced today.

Nearman is the second Panther in three seasons to earn the honor, following Tenia Fisher in 2006.

Nearman capped her junior season at the NCAA Mideast Regional, where she broke the school record in the 5000m, taking eighth in 16:46.88. She fell just one place shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. She was also the highest-finishing Horizon League athlete, male or female, at the regionals.

During the regular season, Nearman was honored as the league's athlete of the week after initially breaking the school 5000m mark at the Drake Relays, where she took fourth. She also earned all-league second-team honors in the 5000m at the league championships and added a third-place finish in the 1500m.

Nearman's accolades have not been limited to the track this season, as she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.
