Current, Former Panthers Shine At Al's Run9/22/2008 - Nate Weiland and Holly Nearman of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track and field program won the men's and women's races at Al's Run Saturday morning in Milwaukee. Weiland, an alum of the track and cross country programs, is currently an assistant with both teams and was the first men's finisher in the field of 1,877. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 24:58, 26 seconds better than second place. Also in the men's race, Aaron Nodolf, another alum, finished fifth and won the men's 30-34 age group. Nearman is still a member of the track and field team and is the reigning Horizon League Outdoor Athlete of the Year. She finished the course in a time of 29:45 to win by nine seconds over second place. She finished 48th overall and was the first of 1,406 women to finish. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field has announced the addition of six incoming freshmen to its team for the 2008-09 season. Head coach Pete Corfeld has announced that Beonca Mitchell of Milwaukee, Wis., Kristine Schuette of Iowa City, Iowa, Shannon Brown of Wilmot, Wis., Erika Hanson of Normal, Ill., Shelby Schaal of Waterford, Wis., and Calanetta Burrows of Menomonee Falls, Wis., have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UWM beginning next month. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee placed a league-best five athletes on the Horizon League Academic All-League Team for outdoor track and field, the league office announced today. Juniors Holly Nearman and Jenni Saarinen led the way, earning both indoor and outdoor honors for the second-straight season. Senior Shannon Buttchen and sophomore Laura Ring were also honorees for the indoor season, while junior Beth Zimmerman made both teams in 2007. Read Full Release |
