Athletic Training Education Program
Mission StatementThe University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sports medicine staff will provide the best possible illness and injury care, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning to all intercollegiate student-athletes at UWM. We will work in cooperation with the university health center staff and community health care providers. The sports medicine staff is committed to providing all healthcare services in a professional manner that demonstrates care, concern, and compassion. We acknowledge that the student-athlete should have a positive athletic career and be able to live the rest of his/her life to its fullest. All will be done within the rules of the State of Wisconsin, the NCAA, the Horizon League, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Sports Medicine Services
Taking care of Sports Medicine issues for the student-athletes is UWM's Integrated Sports Medicine Staff.
There are seven nationally certified, state licensed athletic trainers providing top quality illness and injury care for all student-athletes. The staff also includes a select group of sports medicine professionals, namely the orthopedic physicians William Smith, MD, Todd Swenson, MD, and Don Middleton, MD - all of whom are associated with Orthopedic Hospital of Wisconsin in Glendale, WI and Columbia Hospital directly south of campus adjacent to UWM's campus. Providing vital general medicine health care to the Panthers are Team Physician's Brian Hirano, MD, Marnie Pearsall, MD, and Jon Englund, MD. Additionally, care is provided by the team of medical providers at Norris Health Center on campus. The Panthers have access to other specialized professionals to assist in peak performance, such as chiropractor Ken Koch, DC, dentist Joseph Schell, DDS, and registered dietician Susie Kundrat, RD, all of whom provide expert care for specific sports medicine needs.
The entire staff is involved in the education of over 40 undergraduate athletic training students. In conjunction with the Department of Kinesiology, these students are working toward and studying to become certified athletic trainers in the nationally-accredited Athletic Training Education Program, which is spearheaded by Curriculum Director Dr. Jen Earl and assisted by Dr. Kyle Ebersole, Dr. Rhonda Verdegan, and Director of Clinical Education Dr. Ryan Wilkinson. The undergraduate students accrue valuable experiences while assisting the certified athletic training staff in the day-to-day care of student-athletes sports-medicine needs.

New & Transfer Student-Athletes - Physical Information
Please read the physical information letter first. It explains the physical process required by all freshman and transfer student-athletes. Transfer athletes: you are required to complete a full physical at UWM even if you have completed a physical at another school.
Returning Student-Athletes - Required Information
All returning athletes need to read the insurance letter, fill in the form, and provide a copy of your personal insurance card. If you have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, read that information as there are specific things the NCAA requires we have on file.
